About The Webinar

Excision arthroplasty is a joint salvage procedure to treat conditions, in which the joint itself cannot be preserved with the aim to preserve limb function. Coxo-femoral excision arthroplasty, femoral head and neck excision (FHNE) or femoral haed (and neck) ostectomy (FHO), is a relatively straightforward procedure, not requiring extensive equipment; and is commonly performed in first opinion practice. In recent years, several studies have been published assessing the outcome after FHNE/FHO based on objective and owner-assessed outcome measures.

In this webinar, we will critically review the indications for FHNE/FHO for dogs and cats, assess the biomechanical effects of the procedure, and discuss reported outcomes. The surgical technique will be presented step-by-step, and strategies to avoid complications and for an optimal rehabilitation will be discussed. The principles of shoulder excision arthroplasty and phalangeal excision arthroplasty will be discussed.

At the end of the webinar, you will be able to

  • Define the term ‘joint salvage procedure
  • Describe the related biomechanical changes and associated possible complications of FHNE/FHO
  • Discuss the decision making process in choosing this treatment method
  • Recall the critical surgical steps of FHNE/FHO
  • Propose a rehabilitation plan for dogs and cats after excision arthroplasty
  • Devise a plan how to address possible complications associated with this surgery
  • Describe the basic principles of shoulder and phalangeal excision arthroplasty
