This seminar will cover the basics of the approach to husbandry and clinical conditions in backyard poultry, with a focus on pet chickens, as the fourth most popular pet in the United Kingdom. The presentation will cover some basic background information on pet chickens, including their husbandry, and some information on legalities when prescribing for this species. An approach to the chicken consultation is also covered, with tips for complete history taking, and a thorough clinical exam. Basic supportive care and hospitalisation principles are also covered, as well as a basic approach to common conditions such as ectoparasites, crop stasis and reproductive disease. The aim of this session to make the general practitioner more comfortable in the diagnosis and treatment of the pet hen.
