About The Webinar
This seminar will be about atlantoaxial instability in small animals, most commonly due to developmental disease of young miniature and toy breed dogs. These dogs usually have a malformed or absent dens and develop instability at the C1-C2 joint. Clinical signs and important differential diagnoses will be discussed as well as the special care required during examination and imaging to avoid further trauma to the cervical spinal cord. We will evaluate common radiographic findings and determine reasons to perform additional advanced imaging, in particular MRI. While different surgical treatment options and their goals will be presented, an emphasis is put on selection of and options for conservative management. In particular the use of external coaptation will be demonstrated using step-by-step instructions for a simplified cervical splint.
