Ventral slot is indicated for a ventral approach to the cervical spinal cord to mainly remove herniated disc material. This procedure consists is creating a slot approximately one third of the width of the vertebra and one quarter to one third of its length, each side of the disc space. Hemilaminectomies allows good visualization of the ventral and lateral aspects of the spinal cord and nerve roots. It is the most commonly performed decompressive spinal surgery. It consist in removing bone from the articular processes and pedicles on each side of the intervertebral foramina.
