Corticosteroids are a powerful group of drugs with effects on inflammatory processes and on the immune system in general. Used at the correct dose for a specific period of time, they can be effective medications for many neurological diseases while contraindicated in others. They have been shown to have direct and long term benefit for the immune-mediated diseases affecting the nervous system such as GME, while having short term but dramatic effect on many brain tumors. There are number of well documented adverse effects to consider when used both short and long term. This session will detail the mechanisms of action of steroids and just where the use of corticosteroids can be advantageous in neurological diseases.
