Syringomyelia is a condition characterised by fluid filled cavities (syrinxes or syringes) within the central spinal cord and the resulting damage produces clinical signs of pain and neurological deficits. Since the increase in availability of magnetic resonance imaging syringomyelia is an increasingly common diagnosis in veterinary medicine. The most common cause of syringomyelia in the dog is Chiari-like malformation, a condition characterised by hindbrain overcrowding and cerebrospinal fluid obstruction due to a mismatch in brain (too big) and skull (too small) volume. This lecture is aimed at the general practitioner wanting to learn about this condition and its diagnosis, and management. The British Veterinary Association Kennel Club CMSM Health Scheme and the guidelines for breeding dogs are also discussed.
