Ataxia is defined as incoordination that results from either insufficient proprioceptive (sensory) input to gait centers in the central nervous system or failure of the central regulators of motor function, such as the cerebellum. Animals with ataxia may exhibit crossing of the limbs, falling, leaning, over-reaching, as well as disorganized range and rates of movement, as single signs or in combinations. In veterinary medicine, ataxia is typically sub-classified as general proprioceptive, vestibular, or cerebellar in origin. Although some animals may exhibit ataxia that reflects a combination of these sub-classes, accurate lesion localization is essential in establishing an appropriate list of differential diagnoses and a diagnostic plan.
