Severe hyperthermia or heat stroke, is a relatively common condition in the emergency and critical care settings, secondary to increased muscular activity (working dogs, seizuring animals) or secondary to inadequate heat dissipation ( heatstroke). Severe hyperthermia and heat stroke are responsible for significant deleterious cardiovascular, respiratory , neurological and metabolic effects. If left untreated, they can lead rapidly to multi-organ dysfunction and death.
Evaluation of the body temperature as well as a careful evaluation of the major body systems in the initial assessment of the emergency patient, consent to detect the condition and to initiate the most appropriate aggressive treatments. Understanding the pathophysiological mechanism and the clinical consequences of these conditions, will allow the clinician to rapidly recognise and treat any life threatening complications.
