The lecture will discuss current knowledge on anaesthetic morbidity (complications) and mortality extracted from the most recent scientific studies. The anaesthetic risk factors are identified, analised and understood. This will enable us to implement simple and cost effective measures to reduce anaesthetic deaths and complications in veterinary practice. In the second part of the lecture, we discuss the usefulness of anaesthetic monitoring equipment and a dedicated anaesthetist or anaesthesia nurse. It is known this certainly reduces the risk of death under anaesthesia. Finally a couple of common scenarios are discussed
