About The Webinar

Anaemia is a common presentation for emergency patients, but has a variety of underlying causes, with quite different aetiologies and treatments. This webinar will focus on the approach to these, often unstable, patients. Starting initially with a review of red cell physiology before focusing initially on the presentation, clinical examination and historical clues, that can help us narrow the list of possible causes, before discussing these differential diagnosis in more detail and considering which diagnostic tests will be most helpful in the emergency situation. We will look at basic laboratory findings and cover the key points of basic blood smear analysis, looking for pointers as to the underlying cause such as spherocytes or intracellular inclusions. We will finish by briefly reviewing the treatment options for the various causes of anaemia, including discussing the decision of when to consider transfusing the patient.
