Pruritus is a common presenting sign in seen in equine practice. It is most usually a chronic problem causing significant welfare concerns and distress top the horse and owner. In the vast majority of equine cases pruritus will be caused by parasites or allergy. Given relatively limited list of common differential diagnoses, it is generally not too challenging to reach a clinical diagnosis. However, further more specific investigation and effective treatment and management is frequently far less straightforward and definitely presents greater difficulties. This presentation will discuss the various causes of pruritus in horses and go into more detail of the commonly seen problems such as parasitism and allergies. The basis for allergic disease and the various investigative and treatment options will be covered.
