Feline hyperthyroidism is the most common, endocrine disease in the geriatric cat and so affects many of the patients who frequent our veterinary practices. Clinical signs are varied and be anything from mild to severe, often in some way impacting the quality of life of the animal. Hyperthyroidism is a progressive and lifelong disease, which if left untreated causes subsequent comorbidities which can be fatal. There are a number of options available for these patients that help bring the disease under control, however not all are suitable for every patient. Each treatment comes with a risk of failure or complications and we discuss them is this session, before focusing on the benefits of radioactive iodine treatment, an explanation of how this works and the patients journey within a radioactive iodine facility.
