About The Webinar

Preventative medicine is an essential part of caring for zoo animals and all the more important given that many species have evolved the ability to hide signs of illness, so that clinical signs only become apparent when disease is well advanced and more difficult to treat. The Secretary of State’s Standards of Modern Zoo Practice state that the veterinary surgeon should be actively involved in routine inspections, administration of vaccines, worming, health monitoring including submission of blood and other samples for diagnostic testing, training of zoo staff in health and hygiene, post mortem examinations, supervision of quarantine and nutrition and the design of diets. During a zoo licence inspection, particular attention is paid to provision of animal health care and it is expected that there is ‘a documented programme of preventative and curative veterinary care and nutrition’. This webinar will discuss the various aspects of a comprehensive preventative medicine programme for a zoo, using case studies to illustrate the different components and will prove useful for any vet involved in zoo work, whether for a large or small collection.
