This lecture aims to cover many key aspects of the post-operative nursing of the small animal orthopaedic patient in the immediate and 7-10 day postoperative period. An overview of analgesic, comfort and nutritional needs and practical tips for the immediate post-operative patient will be provided in the first part of this session. Practical and specific post-operative care of common orthopaedic cases, from routine joint to complex fracture surgeries, will be provided. In the final part of this lecture post-operative physiotherapy and exercises for the orthopaedic patient will be discussed. The session will finish with formulating a general discharge plan for the orthopaedic patient for the 4-6 weeks following surgery.
