Signs of lower urinary tract disease include straining, bloody urine and increased frequency of urination, and are common in cats and dogs. Disorders which most commonly cause these signs include urinary tract infections, uroliths, neoplasia and idiopathic feline lower urinary tract disease.
Nutrition is a vital part of the management of uroliths and feline lower urinary tract disease. Some of the uroliths which require dietary management include struvite, calcium oxalate, cystine and urate stones. Of these, struvite stones can be dissolved by dietary management. For all uroliths, dietary management to decrease the urine concentration and adjust the diet to reduce the risk of the reoccurrence of a particular type stone is vital. Balancing the diet against any other conditions the cat or dog may have is also important.
