About The Webinar

Metabolic encephalopathies represent a diverse range of conditions in which disruptions in metabolism compromise normal brain function, resulting in altered mental state and varying neurological deficits. Underlying metabolic derangements may include energy deprivation, accumulation of endogenous toxins and electrolyte abnormalities. Successful management of these conditions requires prompt identification of the underlying cause, effective correction of the identified metabolic abnormalities and continued monitoring to ensure a sustained and appropriate treatment response. Despite the potential severity of clinical signs on initial presentation, these can be very satisfying cases to manage! In this webinar we will review some of the more commonly encountered metabolic encephalopathies, including hepatic encephalopathy, thiamine deficiency and hypocalcaemia, and will discuss the main causes, the typical clinical presentation, means of diagnosis, treatment options and prognosis.
