One of the most common causes of central nervous system dysfunction is inflammatory disease. This can be due to infections but most commonly its due to immune mediated dysfunction. The clinical signs of inflammatory CNS disease are varied and depend on the primary location of the inflammation. However, most cases will present with a sub-acute onset of a progressive focal or multi-focal clinical abnormality.
Diagnosis of inflammatory disease is rarely specific for the cause and so must focus on ruling out other causes of CNS dysfunction via a minimum data base, CSF tap and advanced imaging. The treatment will depend on whether an infectious disease is likely or not and if not then will involve the use of immune-modulatroy therapy.
