Issues with urination are common in dogs and cats that have neurological problems. Retention and incontinence can be seen to be associated with diseases that affect the central and peripheral nervous systems. These issues are important to understand as they can lead to urinary tract infections which can be very difficult to treat and sometimes lead to life threatening situations. The mechanism of urination will be simplified and explained during this session so that it can be easily understood how a disease of the nervous system could impact on the normal physiology. Bladder dysfunction will be addressed by using examples of T3-L3 and L4-S2 lesion affected animals, in each case explaining why we see what we see and how we can treat it. The drugs that we use for bladder management will be addressed in terms of treating these case based scenarios.
