About The Webinar

In this webinar Ava Firth will discuss the basic mechanisms of the systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and sepsis and show how they result in organ dysfunction in the critically ill patient. Ava will also discuss common conditions that predispose to SIRS – the Six Icky Sickies! Early recognition is key to successful management so we will highlight the early warning signs that you can monitor (no blood gas machine necessary!) Management of these patients requires multiple, simultaneous interventions therefore we will talk through a systems-based checklist approach to organising patient care. Detail of delivering key interventions will be given.

The learning goals of this webinar are:

  • understand the basic pathophysiology of inflammation
  • recognise the early and late impact of inflammation upon the body’s various organ systems
  • develop a methodical approach to assessing these changes and monitoring patient response
  • understand how to use inotropes, vasopressors, and colloids
