About The Webinar
Intestinal surgery is one of the most common abdominal surgeries performed in general practice and it is frequently performed as an emergency. The most common indication is foreign bodies; other indications include biopsy for intestinal disease (vomiting, diarrhea), neoplasia, intussusception, volvulus, ulceration/rupture. Animals vary with the extent of dehydration, acid-base and electrolyte abnormalities that they present with.
This webinar will include initial management and stabilisation of animals with gastrointestinal disease. Surgical anatomy will be described and surgical photographs will be used to discuss the techniques of gastrotomy, enterotomy and enterectomy. The use of feeding tubes will be described. Potential complications of surgery will be considered, including septic peritonitis and ileus, as well as how to diagnose and manage septic peritonitis secondary to gastrointestinal wound dehiscence.
