Immune mediated thrombocytopenia (ITP) is a relatively common disease in dogs but much rarer in cats. When cases present bleeding the pressure is on the clinician to make a diagnosis and start effective treatment as there is a risk that the patient will bleed out. Differentiating primary from secondary ITP is difficult as there is no definitive test available for primary disease. As a result treatment may need to be started before a diagnosis has been reached.
