Acute paralysis is a common and potentially overwhelming neurological emergency. Although paralysis is commonly associated with spinal disease, this clinical presentation can also be caused by neuromuscular disease. Neuromuscular disease is characterised by conditions affecting the peripheral nerves, muscle or the junction between the peripheral nerve and muscle, the synapse. Acute paralysis of all four limbs (i.e. tetraplegia) is probably even more commonly caused by neuromuscular than spinal disease. Although the clinical presentation of these animals can be considered severe, acute tetraplegia caused by neuromuscular disease is typically associated with limited differential diagnoses and affected animals can have an excellent prognosis. In this webinar, we will discuss how to recognise neuromuscular disease, how to create a list of differential diagnosis, which diagnostics to consider in practice and how to start successful treatment and obtain excellent outcomes.
