Head tilt in cats refers to vestibular dysfunction and is a relatively common clinical presentation. The neurological examination of cats with a head tilt nevertheless remains a challenge, in particular distinguishing a central from a peripheral vestibular syndrome. This lecture will present the signs associated with peripheral and central vestibular syndromes in cats and will give you tips to recognise either localisation. For example, we will discuss the different types of abnormal eye movements (nystagmus) and how to use this to localise the lesion. We will then move on to clinical cases based on videos to explore the possible differential diagnosis for these cases. This will lead us to briefly review otitis media / interna, naso – oropharyngeal polyps, lymphoma and thiamine deficiency (amongst others) and common diagnostic tests used for vestibular cases, such as CT / MRI or myringotomy.
