This lecture will address the management of cats with urethral obstructions, starting with the current understanding of the physiology behind feline idiopathic cystitis. The causes of urethral obstructions as well as appropriate identification and stabilization will be reviewed. Placement of urinary catheters as well as in hospital management will be discussed. Current literature regarding current management strategies and controversies will be presented, including the use of antispasmodics. Finally, the prognosis following urethral obstruction as well as recurrence rates will be reviewed.
