About The Webinar
Encephalitozoonosis is primarily seen and considered a significant disease of domestic rabbits and its seroprevalence is internationally recognised. Farm and laboratory rabbits have been known for a long time as target species but according to a survey published in 2006, healthy domestic rabbits also show specific antibodies against this parasite in their blood with a prevalence of 52%. Encephalitozoon cuniculi infection may cause neurological, renal and ocular signs. The impact that the different clinical presentations of E. cuniculi infection can have on the quality of life of serologically positive rabbits varies depending whether neurological, renal or ocular disorders are present, alone or in combination. The diagnosis of encephalitozoonosis remains problematic and challenging because a considerable number of rabbits have chronic asymptomatic infection. A combination of physical, neurological and ophthalmologic examination and serology may help ruling out any other relevant differential diagnoses. During this webinar, we will discuss the clinical aspects of this common infection as well as diagnostic approach and therapeutic considerations.
