Presenter: Marge Chandler DVM MS MACVSc DACVN DACVIM DECVIM-CA MRCVS

Dr. Marge Chandler is the Head of the Pet Nutrition Service and a Senior Lecturer in Small Animal Internal Medicine and Clinical Nutrition at the Royal Dick School of Veterinary Studies, University of Edinburgh, Scotland. She has special interests in canine and feline clinical nutrition and small animal internal medicine. She qualified from Colorado State University with a DVM, and also completed a Master of Science in Animal Nutrition at CSU. After 6 years in private practice, she returned to university for a dual residency programme in small animal internal medicine and veterinary clinical nutrition at Colorado State University in the USA and Massey University in New Zealand. She is one of two diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Nutrition in the United Kingdom, a Member of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists, the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, and the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine.

Nutrition plays a key role in the management of gastrointestinal disease, and some cases may be managed by dietary therapy alone. Dietary ingredients can have negative or positive effect on the bowel. The diet may contain toxins, allergens, toxic dietary excesses or nutritional deficiencies. The diet also has a direct effect on the intestinal physiology, affecting motility, cell renewal rate, bacterial flora, enzyme production, ammonia production, and volatile fatty acid content. Several types of diets have been developed for gastrointestinal disorders and dietary supplements are also available.

In this webinar, Marge will discuss dietary management of acute and chronic diarrhoea, including that caused by inflammatory bowel disease, adverse reactions to food, the use of dietary fibre in treatment of gastrointestinal disease, supplementation with vitamins and neutraceuticals, and dietary therapy of canine and feline pancreatopathies.
