Shailen graduated from Cambridge University in 1999 and spent a couple of years in a first opinion and referral small animal hospital before pursuing a career in Emergency and Critical Care (ECC). This has included several years in first opinion out-of-hours practice and an internship and residency in ECC at the Royal Veterinary College, London. In 2010 Shailen became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (DipACVECC) and also had a book on emergency medicine for the first opinion environment published that he sole authored. Shailen has spent the last couple of years providing clinical training and support to vets and nurses working in the non-referral environment and in 2011 also set up a non-profit website that aims to provide information, resources and support to pet carers suffering pet bereavement.

In the last webinar “Hypovolaemia, Shock and Dehydration: I’d Rather be Dry than Pale”, Shailen discussed the differences between hypovolaemia and dehydration. These are the two most common indications for fluid therapy in small animals and in this webinar, he will discuss their treatment further. Shailen will review crystalloids and synthetic colloids and then go on to consider the fluid plan and how it differs for hypovolaemia versus dehydration, including monitoring of fluid therapy in the hospitalised patient. By the end of the webinar it will be clear how fluid therapy for the hypovolaemic trauma patient differs, for example, from fluid therapy for the dehydrated old anorexic cat with chronic renal disease.

This webinar is suitable for all vets in practice, and will be of particular interest to those wishing to improve their confidence using fluid therapy appropriately.
